PARTNER WITH ENGLISH FIRMS TO DEVELOP THE GLOBAL CITY - HCMC'S NEW CENTER

07-04-2022

07 April 2022, witnessed by Graham Stuart, MP, Prime Ministers Trade Envoy to Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, Masterise Homes signed strategic partnership agreements with Foster + Partners, and Quimera Energy Efficiency (QEE) in developing The Global City – 117.4 hectares development in the heart of HCMC.

Foster + Partners, as previously announced, will act as Architectural Advisors of The Global City, providing innovative and sustainable design solutions for the township. QEE – a London-based smart building hi-tech engineering company, will design, install, commission, and maintain state-of-the-art energy efficient systems with minimal rates of energy consumption to reduce both cost and carbon footprint. The joint effort of two renowned British design and energy companies is expected to bring world-class excellence and sustainability to The Global City, realizing its ambition of becoming the second downtown of HCMC.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Youssef Akila, Head of Design Masterise Homes said: “Envisioning The Global City to be South East Asia’s most iconic township, Masterise Homes is committed to bringing the best of the world to our township, including luxury contemporary designs, advanced technology and sustainable solutions. This is the first township in Vietnam to engage Foster + Partners and QEE, both are at the forefront of sustainability practice and will provide the most innovative solutions to create a sustainable urban development which offers long-term values for residents’ well-being, their homes, the township and the environment”.

Akila also discussed various elements of sustainability at The Global City, including greenery, energy, water treatment, and selection of materials. According to Masterise Homes Head of Design, 11% of the masterplan consists of green spaces of many different sizes, which is equivalent to 13 hectares of trees, from small pocket parks to deep foreshore parks with well-connected pedestrian and cycle paths.

Site connectivity via walking paths, cycle paths and bridges allow for the creation of a walking 10-minute city’ that means traditional vehicular transport can be avoided. A local electric transport network of bicycles, electric moped and small carts using lighting poles as charging locations can provide a local carbon positive transport network for the site inhabitants.

Buildings are arranged and designed to limit the sun exposure and solar radiation (30-40% reduction on average) while allowing good ventilation to reduce air conditioning usage for each household and the township as a whole. A smart energy model for the building reduces energy use when not required and renewable energy sources such as Solar thermal provides hot water in all the assets on site.

Senior Partner Toby Blunt of Foster + Partners, said: “Foster + Partners has long believed in design being holistic and respectful of the needs of people and planet. The principles of sustainability are integral to our work. For The Global City as well as any projects in our portfolio, we strive to design buildings that address the effects of climate change, create urban quarters that support thriving communities, and look to improve the quality of life in a city for all. While our architects retain the local traditions and history in our contemporary design, we also employ our sustainability methodology to give greater insight into environmental impact of the project and provide tools to mitigate and lower its carbon content”.

John Chambers, Business Development Director of Quimera Energy shared in his speech: “As Vietnam aims to reduce emissions by 27% by 2030, It is our aim at Quimera to help our clients reach their net zero targets. As will be the case with The Global City Project, Quimera will work closely with Masterise and Foster + Partners to design, install, commission, and maintain state-of-the-art energy efficient plant rooms and systems to deliver thermal energy for maximum comfort with minimal rates of energy consumption to reduce both cost and carbon footprint. Quimera Energy looks forward to deploying our expertise, finance, and our proprietary solutions to this exciting project that we believe could become the template for sustainable communities globally”.

The Global City development located in An Phu ward, Thu Duc city, HCMC started construction last year and is set to complete in the next 48 months.
